നമ്മുടെ ശരീരത്തിലെ കരൾ കോശങ്ങളെ ബാധിക്കുന്ന ഒരു വൈറസ് രോഗമാണ് കരൾ വീക്കം അഥവാ വൈറൽ ഹെപ്പറ്റൈറ്റിസ് (Viral Hepatitis ). മറ്റു പല കാരണങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടും കരൾ വീക്കം ഉണ്ടാകാമെങ്കിലും വൈറസ് ബാധ മൂലമുള്ള കരൾ വീക്കം വളരെയധികം പ്രാധാന്യം അർഹിക്കുന്നു. പ്രധാനമായും അഞ്ചു തരത്തിലുള്ള വൈറസുകളാണ് കരൾ കോശങ്ങളെ മാത്രം സവിശേഷമായി ബാധിച്ച കരൾ വീക്കം ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്. ഇവയെ എപ്പടൈറ്റിസ് എ, ബി, സി, ഡി, ഇ ( Hepatitis A, B, C, D, E) എന്നിങ്ങനെ തരം തിരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇവയിൽ ഹെപ്പറ്റൈറ്റിസ് ബി സി എന്നീ വാഭേദങ്ങളാണ് ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതലായി രോഗികളിൽ കണ്ടുവരുന്നത്. ഈ രണ്ട് വൈറസുകൾ കാരണം മാത്രം 11 ലക്ഷത്തിലധികം രോഗികൾ എല്ലാവർഷവും മരണപ്പെടുകയും ഏകദേശം 30 ലക്ഷത്തിലധികം ആളുകൾ പുതുതായി രോഗബാധിതർ ആവുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതായി ആണ് കണക്കുകൾ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.
ആയതിനാൽ സമൂഹത്തിൽ ഇതേപ്പറ്റി അവബോധം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നതിനു വേണ്ടി ലോകാരോഗ്യ സംഘടന (വേൾഡ് ഹെൽത്ത് ഓർഗനൈസേഷൻ - WHO) എല്ലാവർഷവും ജൂലൈ 28ന്, ലോക കരൾ വീക്ക് ദിനം അഥവാ World Hepatitis Day ആചരിക്കുന്നു. ലോകാരോഗ്യ സംഘടനയുടെ ഏറ്റവും പുതിയ കണക്കുകൾ പ്രകാരം വൈറൽ ഹെപ്പറ്റൈറ്റിസുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട അസുഖങ്ങൾ മൂലം ഓരോ 30 സെക്കൻഡിലും ഒരാൾ വീതം മരിച്ചുവീഴുന്ന ഭീതി ജനകമായ അവസ്ഥയാണ് ഇന്ന് ലോകത്ത് നിലനിൽക്കുന്നത്.
