SNEHAM Deaddiction Center and Psychiatry Hospital

SNEHAM is a centre for deaddiction treatment and management of psychiatric disorders. It is a part of St. Thomas Hospital Changanacherry, a health care project of archdiocese of Changanacherry and a renowned multispecialty hospital established in 1955. SNEHAM offers humane, scientific care from an experienced team of experts.

Our psychiatry hospital admits patients with psychiatric problems. We provide humane, scientific, affordable treatments for mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression, etc. There is no need for bystanders to stay with the patients. Duration of admission will depend on the severity of the illness, and is usually between 1-4 weeks.

Our interventions include detailed assessment, use of appropriate medications, counselling, psychotherapy, psychoeducational group meetings, educating the family about the illness, etc. Our policy is to use the minimum number of medications at the lowest possible dose. Our Hospital Library has lots of self-help books, articles and videos, in both Malayalam and English, which the patients and families can use to gain knowledge about various mental illnesses.

Our Deaddiction Center provides state-of-the-art counselling, psychotherapy and other interventions for patients suffering from addictions like alcohol dependence. The treatment usually takes 10-30 days. There is no need for bystanders to stay with the patient.

The interventions we use in our Deaddiction Center

Detailed assessment of the nature, pattern and causes of the patient's alcohol use.
Use of appropriate medications to manage withdrawal symptoms.
Regular nursing monitoring to screen for emergence of serious withdrawal symptoms like delirium.
Necessary investigations to assess the physical damage caused by alcohol.
Motivational Interviewing to enhance the motivation of patients who are not fully ready to stop the addiction.
Coping Skills Training where we teach the patients various skills and techniques that will enable them to lead a life without alcohol. These include craving management, time management, drink refusal techniques, sleep hygiene skills, anger management, communication skills, developing alternative hobbies and social networks, etc.
