Joy Ice Cream was set up in 1948 by L. C. Java, a London returned mining graduate, and some associates. The company started out in Bombay, and holds the distinction of being the first to industrially manufacture and market ice creams in India.
From its inception, Joy ensured that its products were affordable to people of all strata of society. Yet, high quality was never sacrificed either. An instance of this can be seen in the implementation of the 1946 Heat Treatment Act of the U.K. in India in the 1960s which made it mandatory for all ice creams to be pasteurized and heat-treated. Joy had the clear upper hand here, having already adopted this method from the very beginning.
Constantly improvising upon their products and techniques, Joy introduced duets, balls and other varieties to its Indian consumers. To mark the International Year of the Child (1979), Joy launched the vitamin-enriched I & U Lolly. For cardiac patients and the health conscious, the company developed the Slimmers Milk Treat in 1984, a substitute ice cream with a fat content of less than 1.7% as compared to the 10.5% fat content of normal ice creams. Besides the development of new flavours, the R & D wing of Joy Ice Creams is now working on a range of ice creams for diabetics.
