In USA there is the Professional Engineer Certification (PE) which is administered by the state governments, with the requirement that you reside in the state while obtaining certification.

There is standard study material then a test over the study material. It gives an independent certification of engineering fundamental knowledge.

There are additional requirements of continuing education to keep your knowledge current.
In Australia there is Certified Engineer (CEng) administered by the government.

In Singapore and Malaysia there is Professional Engineer (PE) administered by the government.
